WEATHER, TOPOGRAPHY, AND FUEL

These three factors influence wildland fire behavior and the chances of a fire starting.

They effect:

  1. the speed and direction at which a fire will travel
  2. the intensity at which it burns
  3. the ability to control and extinguish it

Weather or topography cannot realistically be changed, but fuels (or vegetation) can be modified.

Opportunities to reduce wildfire risk lie in proper management of vegetation and use of building materials.

Learn more and find out what you can to to protect your home and help keep your community safe from wildfires.

Living with Wildfires

Minimize Campfire Impacts

  • Use a  lightweight stove for cooking
  • Enjoy a candle lantern for light.
  • Use established fire rings, pans, or mound fires where fires are permitted.
  • Keep fires small.
  • Use only sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand.
  • Burn all wood and coals to ash
  • Put out campfires completely, then scatter cool ashes.
