Be Bearwise!

Be Aware of the bears

As you plan your trip to Forest Lakes this summer, have a plan in place in case you come across a bear. It was a dry winter and we're more likely to see bears wandering into the neighborhood for food.

Below is some information to get you started. Download the files below to keep in your cabin so you and your family (and pets) are safe this summer.

Bearwise Basics

Six at-home basics

  • Never Feed or Approach Bears
  • Secure Food, Garbage and Recycling
  • Remove Bird Feeders when Bears are Active
  • Never Leave Pet Food Outdoors
  • Clean and Store Grills
  • Alert Neighbors to Bear Activity

Dogs + Bears = Trouble

Tips

Download the Bearwise Outdoor Safety pamphlet (above) for more tips on hiking and camping with your dogs.

Be Bearwise with your dog

By nature, black bears are neither confrontational nor aggressive, but dog behavior is more complex.

Dogs are involved in the majority of all physical encounters between people and bears.

If your dog is involved, there's a 50% chance it will be injured or worse. There's a higher chance you'll be hurt if you jump in to help your dog.

REminder

Bears will protect their food and defend their cubs.

Bears don't like to be cornered.

If your dog runs after a bear, it may bring the bear back to you!

Always respect Mother Nature. Especially when she is 400 pounds and is guarding her baby.
